แม่ทัพใหญ่แห่งอาณาจักรทะเลใต้ และสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์แห่งเขามหาชัย

ท่ามกลางขุนเขาและผืนป่าแห่งนครศรีธรรมราช มีสถานที่แห่งหนึ่งที่ได้รับการกล่าวขานมาอย่างยาวนานในฐานะพื้นที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ นั่นคือ “เขามหาชัย” บริเวณที่ตั้งของมหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏนครศรีธรรมราชในปัจจุบัน สำหรับผู้คนที่อาศัยอยู่โดยรอบเขามหาชัย ตั้งแต่พื้นที่บ้านท่างิ้วไปจนถึงบ้านพรหมโลก มีเรื่องเล่าสืบต่อกันมาหลายชั่วอายุคนถึงสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ผู้คุ้มครองสถานที่แห่งนี้ ซึ่งเป็นที่รู้จักในนาม “เจ้าพ่อมหาชัย” หรืออีกนามหนึ่งว่า “พญาชิงชัย”

เรื่องราวของพญาชิงชัยมีหลายแนวทาง และสะท้อนการผสมผสานระหว่างตำนานท้องถิ่น ความเชื่อเกี่ยวกับอาณาจักรโบราณ และเรื่องเล่าที่เชื่อมโยงกับบุคคลสำคัญในประวัติศาสตร์ไทย

“พญาชิงชัย” ตำแหน่งแห่งแม่ทัพและชัยชนะ

ตามคติความเชื่อสายหนึ่ง คำว่า “พญาชิงชัย” มิได้เป็นเพียงชื่อบุคคล หากแต่เป็นชื่อยศหรือตำแหน่งของนักรบระดับสูง มีฐานะเทียบได้กับแม่ทัพแห่ง “อาณาจักรทะเลใต้” ซึ่งในตำนานบางสายเชื่อมโยงกับอาณาจักรศรีวิชัยและนครศรีธรรมราชในอดีต สัญลักษณ์ที่ใช้แทนพญาชิงชัยมักปรากฏเป็นรูป หนุมานถือพระขรรค์ แสดงถึงความเป็นนักรบ ความกล้าหาญ พลังอำนาจ และชัยชนะเหนืออุปสรรคทั้งปวง พระขรรค์ในมือมิได้มีความหมายเพียงอาวุธในการศึก แต่ยังเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของอำนาจ การปกป้อง การตัดผ่านอุปสรรค และการมีชัยเหนือศัตรู ด้วยเหตุนี้ พญาชิงชัยจึงได้รับการเคารพในฐานะเทพนักรบและผู้คุ้มครองสถานที่ โดยเฉพาะบริเวณเขามหาชัย

พญาชิงชัย พระโอรสแห่งองค์จตุคามรามเทพ

ตามตำนานสายจตุคามรามเทพ มีความเชื่อว่าเจ้าพ่อมหาชัยมีนามเดิมว่า “พญาชิงชัย” และเคยปรากฏตัวเกี่ยวข้องกับเขามหาชัยมาแล้วในอีกชาติภพหนึ่ง ในชาติภพนั้น พญาชิงชัยได้รับการกล่าวถึงว่าเป็น พระโอรสขององค์จตุคามรามเทพ ผู้ซึ่งในตำนานสายหนึ่งได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นผู้สร้างและปกครองนครศรีธรรมราช และต่อมาได้รับการเคารพในฐานะเทพผู้พิทักษ์เมืองและเทพประจำหลักเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช พญาชิงชัยได้รับการกล่าวถึงว่าเป็นหนึ่งในกำลังสำคัญขององค์จตุคามรามเทพ ร่วมกับบุคคลสำคัญในตำนาน ได้แก่

ตาขุนลักษณ์
พญาหลวงเมือง
พญาสุขุม
และพญาโหรา

บุคคลเหล่านี้ถูกกล่าวถึงว่าเป็นกำลังหลักในการสร้างบ้านแปงเมืองและรักษาอำนาจของอาณาจักร ในเรื่องเล่าสายนี้ มีการกล่าวถึงการต่อสู้กับกลุ่มพราหมณ์ที่ปกครองเมืองตามพรลิงค์อยู่ก่อนหน้า ก่อนที่ฝ่ายองค์จตุคามรามเทพและเหล่าแม่ทัพจะสามารถครอบครองบ้านเมือง และเริ่มสร้างระเบียบใหม่ขึ้นมา หลังจากนั้นจึงมีตำนานเชื่อมโยงไปถึงการสร้างพระบรมธาตุ การสถาปนาเมือง และการจัดระเบียบหัวเมืองในระบบ สิบสองนักษัตร ซึ่งต่อมากลายเป็นหนึ่งในสัญลักษณ์สำคัญของนครศรีธรรมราช ภายใต้เรื่องเล่านี้ พญาชิงชัยจึงมิใช่เพียงนักรบ หากยังเป็นหนึ่งในบุคคลสำคัญของตำนานการก่อร่างสร้างอาณาจักรทะเลใต้ สิ่งที่น่าสนใจที่สุดในตำนานพญาชิงชัย  แม่ทัพใหญ่แห่งอาณาจักรทะเลใต้ และพระโอรสขององค์จตุคามรามเทพ ไม่ว่าจะอยู่ในฐานะแม่ทัพแห่งอาณาจักรโบราณ หรือขุนพลผู้เฝ้าระวังภัยให้กับพระมหากษัตริย์ พญาชิงชัยยังคงได้รับการจดจำในฐานะนักรบผู้มีความจงรักภักดี ความกล้าหาญ และความเสียสละ

ความหมายแห่ง “พญาชิงชัย”

เมื่อพิจารณาในเชิงสัญลักษณ์ ชื่อของพญาชิงชัยสามารถสะท้อนความหมายของการต่อสู้เพื่อชัยชนะ คำว่า “ชิงชัย” ให้ภาพของการเผชิญหน้ากับอุปสรรคและการต่อสู้เพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งชัยชนะ ขณะที่สถานะ “พญา” สื่อถึงผู้มีอำนาจหรือผู้เป็นใหญ่ เมื่อรวมเข้ากับสัญลักษณ์ หนุมานถือพระขรรค์ ภาพลักษณ์ของพญาชิงชัยจึงเป็นตัวแทนของ

ด้วยเหตุนี้ ผู้ศรัทธาบางกลุ่มจึงเคารพบูชาพญาชิงชัยในด้าน อำนาจ บารมี การปกป้อง การเอาชนะอุปสรรค และความสำเร็จ

Phaya Ching Chai

The Great Commander of the Southern Kingdom and Guardian of Khao Maha Chai

Amid the mountains and forests of Nakhon Si Thammarat lies a place long regarded by local communities as sacred — Khao Maha Chai, the area where Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat University stands today. For generations, people living around Khao Maha Chai, from Ban Tha Ngio to Ban Phrom Lok, have passed down stories of a powerful guardian spirit believed to protect the mountain and its surrounding communities. He is known as  Phaya Ching Chai.

His story survives through several traditions, blending local folklore, memories of ancient southern kingdoms, spiritual belief, and narratives connected with important figures in Thai history.

“Phaya Ching Chai” — A Title of Command and Victory

According to one tradition, “Phaya Ching Chai” was not merely a personal name, but a military title belonging to a warrior of exceptionally high rank — equivalent to a great commander or general of the ancient Southern Kingdom. In some traditions, this Southern Kingdom is associated with the historical and legendary world of Srivijaya and the ancient civilization centered around Nakhon Si Thammarat. The symbol most commonly associated with Phaya Ching Chai is Hanuman holding a sword. Hanuman represents courage, loyalty, strength, intelligence, and the indomitable spirit of a warrior. The sword symbolizes authority, protection, decisive action, and victory over enemies and obstacles. Together, these elements portray Phaya Ching Chai as the embodiment of the victorious warrior — one who confronts danger without fear and protects those under his care. For this reason, Phaya Ching Chai has come to be revered as a warrior guardian, particularly in connection with Khao Maha Chai.

According to local belief, Chao Pho Maha Chai is accompanied by two important attendants.

On his left stands: Thao Si Thep

And on his right: Thao Thep Akson

Both are regarded as loyal retainers who assist Chao Pho Maha Chai in guarding the sacred territory of Khao Maha Chai. Together, the three figures form a spiritual guardianship believed to watch over the mountain and the surrounding communities.

Phaya Ching Chai in an Earlier Incarnation

The Son of Chatukarm Ramathep

The story of Phaya Ching Chai reaches even further into the legendary past. Within certain traditions associated with Chatukarm Ramathep, Chao Pho Maha Chai is believed to have previously appeared in another incarnation under the name Phaya Ching Chai.

In this earlier existence, Phaya Ching Chai is described as a son of Chatukarm Ramathep. In some traditions, Jatukam Ramathep is portrayed as a great ruler associated with the establishment and protection of ancient Nakhon Si Thammarat, and later revered as one of the sacred guardian deities connected with the city’s pillar shrine. Phaya Ching Chai was said to have served as one of the principal military forces supporting Jatukam Ramathep, alongside several other legendary figures:

Ta Khun Lak
Phaya Luang Mueang
Phaya Sukhum
and Phaya Hora

Together, they are remembered in traditional narratives as important commanders, advisers, and supporters involved in securing and establishing the kingdom. Some versions of the legend describe a conflict with Brahmin rulers who had previously controlled Tambralinga, the ancient polity historically associated with the Nakhon Si Thammarat region. After gaining control of the territory, the new rulers are said in legend to have reorganized the kingdom, established its sacred institutions, and contributed to the creation or restoration of important religious monuments.

The traditions further connect these events with the establishment of the sacred Phra Borommathat, the development of Nakhon Si Thammarat, and the formation of the renowned Twelve Zodiac Cities — the Mueang Sip Song Naksat.

Within this legendary framework, Phaya Ching Chai was therefore far more than an ordinary soldier. He was remembered as one of the great warriors involved in the formation, defence, and consolidation of the Southern Kingdom.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Phaya Ching Chai tradition is the belief that the guardian of Khao Maha Chai was connected with the same sacred mountain across two different incarnations.

The Meaning of “Phaya Ching Chai”

The name itself carries powerful symbolism. The word “Phaya” traditionally denotes a person of high rank, power, or authority. “Ching Chai” conveys the idea of competing for, attaining, or seizing victory. Together, the name evokes the image of a powerful warrior who advances toward victory despite whatever obstacles stand before him. Combined with the image of Hanuman holding the sword, Phaya Ching Chai represents:

Courage in the face of adversity
Decisiveness in times of crisis
The strength of a warrior
Loyalty to duty
Protection of followers and devotees
Authority and leadership
and Victory over obstacles

For this reason, some devotees honour Phaya Ching Chai as a sacred figure associated with power, protection, leadership, overcoming difficulties, and success.
